Because of LEAP, I am a good person and I respect myself as a real student. "

Children's Program

LEAP believes in fostering learning within important relationships, using mentorship to teach attitudes, skills and values.

The Children’s Program, currently operating year-round provides 250 - 300 children ages 6 - 12 with summer and afterschool programming to develop children academically and socially.

Our innovative group model pairs one college graduate (Academic Coach) with one college student (Senior Counselor) of the same gender to work with a group of ten to twelve boys or girls of the same age-range.

LEAP children engage in structured activities to strengthen math, reading, and writing skills while developing socially within a team of their peers.  Academic Coaches and Senior Counselors plan and implement curriculum to increase their children’s learning capacity and broaden the way that each young person thinks about themselves and others.

In the after-school program, the LEAP day includes homework help, skill-building educational activities, individual and group reading, journaling, sharing time and enrichment (arts, athletics, computer technology, swimming, etc.).

In the summer program, the LEAP day runs from early morning to late afternoon, focusing on reading, academic enrichment and social development in a camp-like environment that includes community service, intensive literacy support, and a broad array of inside and outside of the classroom activities.  All summer, Senior Counselors live in housing in their children’s neighborhoods, becoming part of the fabric of their children’s community.
