Because of LEAP »

Because of LEAP, I am a good person and I respect myself as a real student. "

—Desiree, Leader-in-Training

Did you know that Wexler-Grant Community School…

...is LEAP’s first school-based site?  LEAP and the New Haven Public Schools have partnered to start a new initiative in the fall of 2010.  LEAP will serve as the Community Partner coordinating the afterschool program for Wexler Grant Community School.  LEAP’s traditional neighborhood model brings together children who live in the same vicinity but may attend different schools across the city.  In this model (currently our Church Street South and Farnam Courts sites), students come from various schools and meet at one central location for the afterschool LEAP program.  With our new school-based model at Wexler, LEAP will serve only Wexler-Grant students, allowing them to attend the program right at their own school.  Students will benefit from having the convenience of an enriching afterschool program that begins immediately after school dismissal.  This allows for a full three hours of programming that includes snack and homework time; reading, writing and math workshops; and arts and athletics clubs.

...houses a Family Resource Center, open year-round to families.

...collaborates with many New Haven organizations to bring afterschool resources to Wexler students.  Partners include Music Haven, Yale Athletics Department and Yale-Dwight Hall Academic Mentoring Program, to name just a few.  LEAP will coordinate all programming so that children can participate in as many activities as possible.

...was created in 2002 from a merger of two different schools:  Helene W. Grant and Isadore Wexler Schools.
