Meet Some LEAPers!

LEAP Student, Sixth Grader

“LEAP has made me a better reader. I love reading with my counselors, and I’m also so excited that LEAP gave me books to bring home because before all I had was baby books.”

To improve their literacy skills and close the achievement gap, LEAP kids read an average of 17 books every summer and get to keep 5 books for their home libraries. Payton shares her new books with her three siblings.

What's New at LEAP?

Now accepting applications for summer children and teen programs!

LEAP is excited to announce that we will be running our summer program this year! It will consist of a four-week program, beginning on July 6th, with the possibility of extending to six weeks. Small groups of kids will rotate weekly between a virtual program and an in-person program.

For safety reasons, only 350 children and teens will be able to attend and only 30 kids will be on-site at any of our six locations. The program will require safety protocols including masks for all staff and children, daily temperature checks and extensive cleaning.

Applications are available here for the children's program (ages 7-12) and here for the LIT program (ages 13-15).

LEAP Programs Now Running Online

Because of the state of public health emergency, LEAP counselors are now meeting with kids and teens using online tools like Zoom and Google Hangouts.  If you have not been in touch with your child's counselor to learn how our programs are running, please give them a call or email.  If you don't have their contact information, email LEAP using the contact button on this website or contact their site coordinator using the About/Staff link.  We are not answering our main phone number or checking messages so please use email.

Because of COVID-19, our programs are now all online. LEAP follows the guidance of the City of New Haven and the New Haven Public Schools on program closures.  As such, we have closed our community center building and stopped running after school programs in the New Haven Public Schools.

Check out our COVID-19 section of this website for information on important issues like unemployment insurance, food access, and activies with kids.

LEAP is honored to be chosen as one of 78 Make a Splash programs in the U.S. to receive grant money from the USA Swimming Foundation!
