New Haven residents mingled with Pulitzer-winning journalists, law professors, and local high school students over hors d’oeuvres and chilled Thursday, Feb. 28. The 2019 LEAP Year Event annual fundraiser brought together over 500 community members to support Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership (LEAP), a local nonprofit that provides free after-school and summer programs to over 1,200 young people from low-income neighborhoods in New Haven.

This Thursday, Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership will kick off the 24th iteration of its LEAP Year Event — an annual series of fundraising dinners featuring diverse guest speakers. This year, the fundraiser includes a roster of 31 dinner events that collectively cover a wide range of topics — from the history of pizza in New Haven to astrophysics.

From now through New Year’s Eve, when holiday shoppers check out at Barnes & Noble North Haven, they can buy a book for one of the 1,200 children who attend LEAP’s after-school and summer programs. LEAP provides a literacy-focused curriculum and enrichment activities for children from five of New Haven’s lowest income neighborhoods – all free of charge.

A fortune-teller sat at a desk, reading the future for a child. In the main gym next door, other children got their faces painted and played games to win halloween candy. Families decorated pumpkins and cookies in other rooms nearby.

Despite severe cutbacks in state funding, Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership — a New Haven organization that offers after-school youth programming — has reopened its fifth location. Because of the expansion, about 250 more young Elm City residents will benefit from LEAP’s programs, a 25 percent increase from last year.
