Briana Gaines is 13, a participant in LEAP’s Leaders in Training program, and a computer coder. She took a computer coding class at the LEAP Computer Learning Center as did 90 other students during this Spring Component in our after-school and weekend enrichment programs.
Although apprehensive to write code at first, Briana soon realized that “it was fun to learn how computers respond to different commands.” She was excited to create her own website “because we were able to build the site based on our own personality and goals.” She added that because she was able to understand the coding process quickly, she could help her peers and develop her leadership skills.
In the LEAP coding program, students learn to work with algorithms, binary functions and
looping as well as problem solving skills and the importance of precision. In the after school coding classes, 66 students wrote an impressive 14,329 lines of code! Gaining these new skills expands their view of what they can do in school and what is possible for them in the future, which is what LEAP is all about!
