Teen Leaders In Training (LITs)

Summer Program 2021

This summer, LEAPs LIT program will be running a full in person 5-week summer program. Our hours of operation will be Monday – Friday 8am to 1pm.  We will be operating out of our community center.  For safety reasons, much of our programming will be outdoors.  Dates for the summer program are July 5th – August 5th.

To apply for the LIT program, teens must be between the ages of 13 and 15 years old and live in New Haven.

This summer our focus for LITs will be on literacy and our four main program components:

  1. social and emotional learning

  2. college readiness/ secondary education

  3. case management

  4. internships

The summer read will be MONSTER by Walter Dean Myers. We are very excited to read this book and watch the movie.

The LIT program will also include numerous fun activities such as: cooking, dancing, photography, art, coding, and building websites.

Required summer documents

  1. Completed application including essay question

  2. A copy of teen's physical

  3. A copy of teen's insurance card

  • Strong Safety protocols: All teens and counselors will be required to wear masks at all times.  All teens must be screened into the program every day with a temperature check and a completed survey so that we know they are not sick and have not come into contact with anyone who is sick. If your teen is not feeling well or someone in your house has COVID-19 symptoms, please keep your teen home.

Leaders In Training (LITs) support senior and junior counselors by volunteering with younger children. They also get their own unique age-appropriate programming which includes academic support, health education, community service, and job exploration.

LEAP's LIT program (afterschool and summer) program is available for teens ages 13 to 15. Unlike the children's program, LITs can come from any New Haven neighborhood. LITs receive a small stipend and many advance into other positions at LEAP, including Junior Counselors and Swim Instructors.
