Back to School 2021

LEAP is reopening programs in January 2021.  Because of the high levels of COVID-19 we are primarily running online programming.  However we plan to have limited in-person programming as well but we will initially limit this to outdoor activities as we know that it is safer to operate outdoors than indoors during the pandemic.  As the level of community spread of COVID-19 hopefully goes down, we plan to have more in-person programming, and to potentially move some of it indoors.  While we think in-person programming is important, we also want to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Our LIT program will focus on homework help, academic support, and fun activities to supplement teen's school experience.

To apply for the LIT program, teens must be between the ages of 13 and 15 years old and live in New Haven.

Initially, and for as long as we feel it is unsafe to meet in-person and indoors, LEAP's programs will include the following:

  • Fun online group activities like arts and crafts, group projects, dance, science activities and educational games.

  • Online homework assistance and tutoring.

  • Outdoor in-person activities like neighborhood walks and scavenger hunts.  These will occur every one or two weeks.  For all outdoor in-person activities, teens must wear a mask at all times.  All teens must be screened into the program every day they meet in person with a temperature check and a completed survey so that we know they are not sick and have not come into contact with anyone who is sick. If your teen is not feeling well or someone in your house has COVID-19 symptoms, please keep your teen home.

    • Teens should dress warmly for outdoor activities.

    • If there is someone who is vulnerable to COVID-19 in your household (for instance a senior citizen or someone whose immune system is compromised), then it may not make sense for your teen to participate in our in-person program (they can still participate in all of our online programs).

Once it becomes safer and we do reopen more in-person programming, our programs will include:

  • Strong Safety protocols: All teens and counselors will be required to wear masks at all times.  All teens must be screened into the program every day they meet in person with a temperature check and a completed survey so that we know they are not sick and have not come into contact with anyone who is sick. If your teen is not feeling well or someone in your house has COVID-19 symptoms, please keep your teen home. If there is someone who is vulnerable to COVID-19 in your household (for instance a senior citizen or someone whose immune system is compromised), then it may not make sense for your child to participate in our in-person program (they can still participate in our virtual program).

  • LEAP will have small groups that meet in our community center.

  • LEAP will have a combination of hybrid in-person and online programs.  Teens will particpate 2 days a week in-person and 2 days a week online.

  • LEAP staff will have COVID-19 tests every 2 weeks.
