Hybrid Summer Program 2020
This year, LEAP ran a summer program that fulfilled many of the needs of children and parents while keeping everyone safe based on the health guidelines from the state. LEAP's Summer Program looked like this:
-
Our four-week program began on July 6th.
-
Small groups of 6 children were overseen by two counselors.
-
Children rotated weekly between an online program and an in-person program (Example: Week 1 in-person, Week 2 online, Week 3 in-person, Week 4 online).
-
Virtual programming was 2-hours per day focusing on literacy and educational activities from LEAP's curriculum specific to each of our age groups.
-
In-person programming was outdoors (with tents) from 8am-12pm at New Haven schools and the LEAP community center with literacy, sports, games, and nature-focused activities.
-
LEAP’s summer program was free for all participants and served 350 children and teens.
-
Safety protocols for in-person programs included free masks for all staff and children, daily temperature checks, and extensive cleaning and sanitizing. The program took place primarily outside.
An experienced Site Coordinator with trained counselor pairs drawn from local colleges and high schools oversaw all programs. Counselors took part in a two-week intensive training including safety standards, group management, parent contact, social & emotional health, our curriculum and more.
