LEAP Student, Sixth Grader

“LEAP has made me a better reader. I love reading with my counselors, and I’m also so excited that LEAP gave me books to bring home because before all I had was baby books.”

To improve their literacy skills and close the achievement gap, LEAP kids read an average of 17 books every summer and get to keep 5 books for their home libraries. Payton shares her new books with her three siblings.

What's new at LEAP?

As you know, LEAP has always been vital to the New Haven community, but it is now more important than ever as New Haven families suffer economically and the time children are out of school extends.

Have you heard of the Great Give? It is a 36-hour, online-giving fundraising event for Greater New Haven nonprofits on May 5th and 6th. LEAP is participating and we want you to, as well!

LEAP hopes to raise $65,000 for the summer program. LEAP has already been promised $32,500 in matching funds. If you contribute to the first $32,500 dollars donated, your donation will be doubled. You can start donating to it now! Go here to check out our Great Give profile.

LEAP Programs Now Running Online

Because of the state of public health emergency, LEAP counselors are now meeting with kids and teens using online tools like Zoom and Google Hangouts.  If you have not been in touch with your child's counselor to learn how our programs are running, please give them a call or email.  If you don't have their contact information, email LEAP using the contact button on this website or contact their site coordinator using the About/Staff link.  We are not answering our main phone number or checking messages so please use email.

Because of COVID-19, our programs are now all online. LEAP follows the guidance of the City of New Haven and the New Haven Public Schools on program closures.  As such, we have closed our community center building and stopped running after school programs in the New Haven Public Schools.

Check out our COVID-19 section of this website for information on important issues like unemployment insurance, food access, and activies with kids.

Thank you again to all of our supporters who attended, donated, hosted, served as Guests of Honor and Sponsored! It was our most successful fundraiser ever and we couldn't have done it without you!

We currently have open enrollment for all five LEAP Site Locations. Current Site Locations are:

1. Clinton Avenue School (Fair Haven North)

2. Fair Haven K-8 (Fair Haven South)

3. Troup School (Dwight Kensington)

4. King Robinson School (Dixwell)

5. Roberto Clemente (Hill South)

Programming will be conducted from Monday, January 27th through Thursday, May 14th, 2020.

All parents must complete a Children's Program Application and submit it to the LEAP office or the office at one of the schools listed. Please note that children are not automatically accepted into the program by submitting forms. LEAP Site Coordinators will contact parents and guardians listed on the application form with status updates within forty-eight hours of application submissions.
